So many guys have heard stories about the beauty of Colombian women and ask me: “How much Spanish do I need to know?” “Do many girls there speak English?”
While knowing Spanish in Colombia is not a magic bullet that will have modelesque Latina women queuing up to ride your brains out, it certainly makes a difference for many reasons. This article will discuss why knowing Spanish gives you an advantage in Colombia and then delves into specific steps and actions you can take to sharpen your Spanish skills.
Define Your Ideal Outcomes
You might be planning on spending a week or less in Colombia and you have lined up three dates per day, all within walking distance of your hotel. If that’s the case, you might not care about making new friends, ordering food or learning about the local culture. That’s fine; you just want to experience the girls. However, you still need Spanish if you want to experience the finest female talent Colombia has to offer for the following reasons:
Tinder Girls and Gringo Hunters
If don’t care about getting with girls that have been slammed and ruined by every gringo passing through, then throw the Spanish phrasebook out of the window because you won’t need it. All you need is a Tinder profile, a cupid account and a big sign above your head that says “foreigner with money”. Some blond highlights and blue eye contacts will help too.
However, if you want to meet some sweet Colombianas that haven’t been jaded by multiple foreign-guy pumpings, you need Spanish. It’s all about access and options. Without any Spanish, you are limited to online and gringo groupies. With some knowledge of Spanish, your net widens and your options multiply.
English in Colombia – City Guide
English levels in Colombia vary widely depending on where and when you go. For example, at high-end nightclubs in Bogota, you will find girls that speak English. On Tinder in Bogota, Medellin and Cali, you have a good chance of meeting girls who speak English. In any place other than the ones I’ve mentioned – forget it, you need Spanish. Colombian Cupid can be a great help.
The Contemporary Conquest
Here is some news for you from the streets of Colombia: Medellin is almost ruined and Cali is on the way. Hordes of thirsty gringos are pouring into those places. These guys don’t have a good reputation locally and all the girls are getting used to foreign guys. If you don’t want to be tarred with the same brush and you want to stand out – learn Spanish. Knowing Spanish increases your value. As we know, girls are all about value. Colombian women want you to meet their friends and family so being able to communicate with them is a plus.

Get Chatting Online
I recommend starting with Colombian Cupid (paid) and Tinder (free). For Tinder, you will need to invest in Tinder Plus or download Bluestacks to spoof your location.
Chatting with girls online will give you the chance to practice your Spanish without the fear of making mistakes and having uncomfortable conversations in person.
Get Pickup Spanish
Full disclosure: this is my course and the reason I’m recommending it here is that courses such as Rosetta Stone, Pimsleur, and Duo Lingo will teach you generic Spanish aimed at the mass market. Pickup Spanish will teach you how to communicate with Latinas so that you can get laid. I recommend studying Pickup Spanish for a few days before you go to Colombia and for the first few days after you arrive. After that, start having dates with local girls and have them teach you more Spanish.
Spanish Lessons in Colombia
Taking Spanish classes in Colombia is cheap, but here are a few caveats:
- Make it clear to your teacher what you want to learn. Don’t say to him/her: “teach me Spanish”. Languages are never ending and you need to be specific.
- The barrier to entry for being a teacher of Spanish in Colombia is very low – being a native speaker is enough. Make sure you find somebody who knows how to explain complex structures and is not just paid to talk.
- Don’t sleep with your Spanish teacher (if she’s female of course)
It’s your call, if you just want to run through girls that all the other foreign guys have had and rack up a few notches without having to leave your hotel room, that’s cool. If you want to collect some memories and have a positive experience, start studying now.
You’ll get out of Colombia what you put into it.
